１．画家略伝
　　　　 ワッツは1817年にロンドンのマリルボーンで生まれた。　貧しいピアノ職人の息子で、生来病弱であったため正規の教育を受けることはなかったが、繊細な子供だった。　非常に早い時期からその才能を示し、10歳から、ウィリアム・ベーネス（William Behnes）に彫刻を習いだし、18歳でロイヤル・アカデミー・オブ・アーツに入学した。　George Frederic Watts, by Henry Wyndham Phillips1843年にウエストミンスターホールの壁画コンクールで金賞を得、そして1847年までイタリアを旅行し、古代彫刻やティツアーノやミケランジェロらルネッサンスの芸術を研究した。妻エレン・テリーをモデルにしたもの

帰国後、同時代の社会問題を扱った作品を描くが、やがて寓意的な作品を多数制作した。　一方で、当時の著名人、文人、芸術家を描いた肖像画も数多く残している。

1864年に17歳の誕生日の7日前の女優のエレン・テリーと結婚したが、エレンはで、年の差は30歳近くあった。　しかし、結婚から1年も経たないうちに、エレンは別の男と駆け落ちした。　1886年にワッツはスコットランドのデザイナーで陶芸家のメアリー・フレイザー＝タイトラーと再婚したが、自画像69歳のワッツに対してメアリーは36歳で、この時も年の差は開いていた。

1867年にロイヤル・アカデミーの会員となるが、この頃より彫刻作品にも関心を示し、多くの作品を手掛けている。

ワッツは観念的な主題を数多く描いたが、同時代のラファエロ前派とはほぼ無関係で、様式的にもラファエロ前派の細密描写と異なり、輪郭線をぼかすことにより、幻想的イメージを作り出している。写真


1891年、サリー州ギルドフォードの南にあるコンプトン近郊の「Limnerslease」という家に引っ越し、1904年に没する。
