１．画家略伝

アングル Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres 1780～1867 フランスの新古典主義絵画の巨匠。フランスのモントーバン生まれ。父はめぐまれない彫刻家・画家であった。
1797年パリの新古典主義の画家ダビッドの弟子になり、1801年に絵画「アキレウスの陣営を訪れるアガメムノンの使者たち Achilles Receiving
the Envoys of Agamemnon 」でローマ大賞をえる。06～20年ローマに留学し、素描の才能を開花させた。イタリア・ルネサンスの画家ラファエロからの影響も大きく、アングルの様式は、まさにダビッドとラファエロからの感化によって形成されたといえる。イタリア滞在中、多くの鉛筆による肖像素描をのこしたが、そこにみられるのは簡潔で素朴な作風である。20年ローマをさり、フィレンツェにいき4年間滞在した。
パリにもどり、モントーバンのノートルダム大聖堂の注文により描いた「ルイ13世の誓願 The Vow of Louis XIII」(1824)が、1824年パリのサロンに出展されると大きく称賛されてレジオン・ドヌール勲章をうけ、アカデミー会員に選出された。彼は新古典主義のリーダーであることを自覚し、ドラクロアやジェリコーらのロマン主義運動に反対した。
このころ、パリのルーブル宮の天井に「ホメロス礼賛 The Apotheosis of Homer」(1827)をえがいた。
1834年、「聖サンフォリアンの殉教 The Martyrdom of St. Symphorian 」(1834)の悪評に憤慨した彼は、パリをさり、フランス・アカデミーの院長としてローマにおもむく。7年後ふたたびパリにもどると、今度はフランスでもっとも偉大な画家のひとりとしてむかえられ、画家としての地位と反ロマン主義のリーダーとしての地位が確立した。
55年パリ万博美術展に出展し、ライバルのドラクロワとともに金賞を受賞した。
卓越したデッサン力、個性を的確に描写するするどい感性、正確な新古典主義的線描というアングルの特質は、まさに肖像画に適している。「ドーソンビル伯爵夫人 Vicomtess Othenin d'Haussonville」(1845)、「立てるイネス・モワテシエ夫人 Madame Paul-Sigisbert Moitessier」(1851)が名高く、「ルイ・フランソワ・ベルタン氏 Louis-François Bertin 」(1832)は、19世紀を代表する肖像画のひとつである。
晩年まで制作意欲はおとろえず、82歳のとき女性ヌードの最高傑作「トルコ風呂 The Turkish Bath」(1863)をえがいた。アングルの影響力は今日にいたるまではかり知れず、彼の様式からインスピレーションをうけた画家は、ドガ、ルノワール、マティス、ピカソなど数多い。
