トーマス・コール　Thomas Cole

１．画家紹介
	1801年、イギリス　ランカシャー州生まれ。1818年米国に渡り、フィラデルフィア・アカデミーに学ぶ。当時、芸術、美術の分野では米国の”独立"は未だ覚束ない時代にあって”アメリカ絵画"と呼ぶに相応しいものを確立した最初の一人として記憶される。 彼は47年という短い生涯に1829年、1841年、夫々3年ずつ欧州に旅し、フレンツエに滞在している。イタリアでは過去の美術に接し、ローマ帝国の歴史を身近に感じながら、「帝国の運命」(The Course of Empire)という五部作を構想し、完成させている。 もう一つの代表作は、「人生の旅路」（The Voyage of Life）である。これらの作品では風景が大きな比重を占めるが、単なる風景ではなく、そこに歴史的な人物や記念碑、古典的な建築などを導入し、またしばしば象徴的、寓意的な意味を含ませている。 また、アメリカ的な雄大な風景画の創始者としても知られている。彼はニューヨーク州のハドソン河畔を愛したが、彼の影響を受けた若い画家たちはやがてハドソン・リバー派という、米国で最初の、かつ最もアメリカらしい風景画の一派を形成した。 1848年ニューヨーク州で没する。
